Why is this useful on board?
The loud start chimes and visual countdown provide peace of mind during the starting procedure. Sapphire crystal and 10 ATM water resistance withstand splashes, rain, and deck action. The Luminova hands remain legible in twilight and at night.
Quick checklist on board:
• Crown closed?
• After salt water: rinse & dry
• Clean bezel and sound openings
• Keep leather strap dry, TPU/stainless steel for wet deck
• Annual pressure test + monitor battery/EOL
For regular use of the watch we recommend:
• After salt or chlorine use: Always rinse with fresh water. Rotate the bezel while rinsing and pat everything dry with a microfiber cloth.
• Crown & Water: Ensure the screw-down crown is closed before contact with water. Do not operate the crown or pushers underwater.
• Cleaning the glass and case: Clean the sapphire crystal with lukewarm water and microfibre; do not use aggressive agents (no acetone, alcohol, abrasives).
• Bezel & “sound box”: keep the openings free of salt/sand by rinsing well; this will ensure that the acoustic signals remain maximally audible.
• Strap – leather: Keep it dry. Still wet? Rinse briefly with fresh water and leave it flat to dry (away from the heater/sun). Avoid sunscreen, perfume, and cleaning products. Apply leather conditioner once or twice a year to keep it supple (test on a small area first).
• Strap – TPU/stainless steel: Rinse with fresh water; if dirty, use a mild soap solution and a soft brush. Dry thoroughly.
• Service & Battery: Expect 2–3 years with normal use. Do you see an EOL indication (seconds hand jumps in larger increments)? Have the battery replaced and pressure tested by a professional jeweler.
• Check water tightness: have the gaskets and water tightness tested annually (or after a hard impact) — certainly before the new sailing season.
Heat & magnets: Avoid saunas/jacuzzis and extreme temperature fluctuations. Do not place the watch on strong magnets/speakers/compasses.
• Store: dry, out of direct sunlight, and preferably in a case. Do not store leather in an airtight container while it is still damp.
Does 10 ATM mean I can dive with this TNG sailing watch? No, 10 bar, 10 ATM, or 100 meters (100m) means water resistant, making this watch ideal for swimming (even in seawater) and water sports. For deep-sea diving, choose a diver's watch.
• Why is my watch strap discolouring?
Discoloration is caused by sunlight (UV), moisture (sweat/sea and chlorinated water), and chemicals (sunscreen, cosmetics, cleaning products). The acidity of your skin also plays a role. Therefore, discoloration can occur faster in some people than others: plastic straps discolor faster than steel; leather ages naturally.
• Can I swim or shower with this watch?
The casing is waterproof: suitable for swimming/snorkeling (not diving). Hot water and saunas are not recommended with this watch. A leather strap and water are not a good combination; for regular water use, choose a TPU or stainless steel strap.
• How loud and clear is the starting signal for the countdown?
The Sailmaster has an additional sound box in the back cover for clear, loud audible signals plus visual feedback. Volume perception depends on wind, waves, and crew. Tip: test the countdown on deck before starting to find your ideal settings.
• How long does the battery last and what does EOL mean?
Average lifespan: 2–3 years with normal use. The EOL indicator stands for End of Life indicator and indicates that the battery is low (the second hand will then make larger jumps/intervals). Replace the battery at a qualified jeweler soon to ensure water resistance.
• Which watch strap type best suits my use?
A leather strap is stylish and comfortable for on shore and in the clubhouse; occasional water exposure is fine, but make sure to dry it thoroughly afterward. Leather wears naturally. If you spend a lot of time in the water or on a wet deck, a TPU strap is ideal for water resistance and low maintenance. Stainless steel is sleek, durable, water-resistant, and requires little care. However, you do need to find it comfortable to wear. Choose the color of your leather strap and top ring to match your boat and gear; changing them is quick and easy.
