More about the navigation & boating collection
Navigation & sailing: what works when the screen fails. Almost everyone relies on electronics for sailing, and it works well — until a battery dies, a plotter fails, or a wet hand on a touchscreen does nothing. The instruments here don't need power. That's not nostalgia, that's redundancy.
Compasses in every mounting style: flush, surface, bulkhead, deck, overhead, and bracket, from 3 to 6 inches. The choice starts with where it will be placed; measure your mounting depth and line of sight before choosing.
Navigation instruments for charting: chart dividers, plotters, and parallel rulers from Weems & Plath and Plastimo. For those required to carry paper charts on board, or who simply prefer the overview provided by paper.
Clinometers read your angle of heel. For sailors, it's a trim question—above a certain angle, you lose speed; for motorboat operators, it's a stability question.
Binoculars in 7x50, the maritime standard size. More magnification is actually worse on the water: the movement of the boat is magnified proportionally.
From Plastimo, Autonautic Instrumental, Vion, and Weems & Plath . For commercial shipping, we carry certified compasses.

Frequently asked questions
That depends on where your compass will be mounted. Flush mounting is recessed into the panel and requires mounting depth. Surface mounting sits on top and is easier to install. Bulkhead is for a vertical wall, deck and roof for a horizontal surface, and bracket if you want to be able to take it with you. Measure your space and your line of sight before choosing. And please contact us if you have any questions, we're here for you!
Seven times magnification and a fifty-millimeter lens. More magnification on the water is actually worse: the movement of the ship is amplified proportionally, and at ten times, the image dances too much. That fifty millimeters captures light, which counts at dusk.
=Metal and electronics on board disrupt the magnetic field, just as a steel hull, a loudspeaker, or an installed engine can cause your course to deviate by several degrees. Many compasses have compensating magnets to adjust for this. On a steel or aluminum ship, professional compass compensation is not a luxury.
for many sailing areas and certainly at sea, and regardless: batteries run out and plotters fail. Paper navigation is the only method that does not require power. Check what is mandatory for your sailing area. But most importantly, what you feel comfortable with. And our captain has sailed several ocean trips and always had a paper backup.
The angle of your ship to port or starboard. For sailors, it's a trim question; above a certain angle, you lose speed and make leeway. For motorboaters, it's a stability question: a persistent list indicates uneven loading or water where it shouldn't be.
