More about the clock & time collection
Time on board is never just time. It's the watch being relieved, the tide turning, the moment you have to turn back to be in before dark. That's why instruments that measure time on board have always been more than just a clock on the wall.
Ship's clocks are the heart of this collection. In brass, chrome-plated brass and stainless steel, mechanical or quartz, with or without ship's bells. Also as a tide clock that follows high and low tide instead of the hours.
Chronometers are precision instruments: timepieces in a wooden casing that maintain their accuracy despite vibrations and temperature changes. The instrument that made navigation at sea possible.
Ship's bells in polished brass, for on board or on a wall. Traditionally for time indication and fog signalling, now mainly for the sound and the story.
Water sports watches that you take with you: waterproof, easy to read and with a regatta timer for the starting procedure.
We carry brands that have been doing this for generations: Wempe, Autonautic Instrumental, Schatz, Barigo, Chelsea Clock, Weems & Plath, Fischer, Plastimo. And we remain serviceable: batteries, keys and hanging rings can be found under parts & service, even for older models.
A clock next to a barometer is the classic combination on the wall. Together they do more than separately.
Frequently asked questions
You wind a mechanical movement every eight days with a key. For many, that's part of its charm: it's an action, and a good mechanical movement lasts for generations. Quartz runs on a battery, is more accurate, and requires nothing from you. Both are good choices; the difference lies in what you want from a clock.
On board, time was traditionally indicated by bells: an additional strike every half hour, up to eight bells at the end of the watch. A ship's bell clock still does that. Note that it also strikes at night — usually not a good idea for a bedroom, although some models have a night mode.
Ship's bells are measured by dial diameter, in inches. Three to four inches is compact and fits well in a cabin. Four and a half to six inches reads from a distance and has more presence on a wall at home. Measure your space: six inches is larger than it appears in a photo.
This does not follow the time but the tide, and shows whether it is high or low tide. Practical in tidal areas, and a conversation starter if you are not sailing there.
Usually, yes. We stock batteries, winding keys and hanging rings, even for models that are no longer manufactured. Send a photo of the back or the type plate, and we'll figure it out.
