The Plastimo 35886 is designed according to the familiar porthole principle, with a substantial brass housing and a matte chrome layer that helps reduce annoying glare. This makes this ship's clock particularly suitable for mounting in a wheelhouse, cabin, dashboard, or a maritime interior where light conditions vary. The 80mm white dial keeps the time display clear and calm, while the quartz mechanism requires little maintenance and runs reliably.
What strongly distinguishes this model within the range is the front opening. For a battery change or setting the time, you don't have to unscrew the clock first. This is practical on board, but also pleasant in a home, office, or hospitality environment. With its installation height of approximately 50 mm and base diameter of 120 mm, this clock has visible weight and presence. It is a classic Plastimo model that has been appreciated for years for its solid construction, recognizable form, and durable usability.
Frequently Asked Questions
Some clocks come with screws so you can hang them directly in the pre-drilled holes. Other brands offer a convenient hanging system: first attach the wall mount with screws and then simply hang the clock over it. This system makes adjusting the time, such as for time zones, tides, or daylight saving time, much easier.
Ship clocks are specifically designed for the maritime environment and are therefore robust and resistant to the elements at sea, such as shocks. They feature a nautical design, such as a classic ship style or a mechanical winding system. In addition, ship clocks offer features such as tide or dual time zones, which are not usually found in conventional clocks. Conventional clocks are more often designed for home or office use and are less resistant to the harsh conditions at sea. The main differences, therefore, lie in the materials, design, and functionality.
Choose the type of clock that best suits your needs, such as a standard ship's clock, tide clock, clock with silent zones, or with ship's bells. Measure the space on board or on the wall in your home for the correct diameter, and consider additional items such as a barometer or thermohygrometer. Ship's clocks can be hung in various ways: with screws or with a convenient mounting system for simple adjustments (such as time or tides). Some clocks have a porthole for easy adjustment of the movement. Also consider the appearance and material to ensure the clock blends well with your interior.
There are several types of mechanisms, two of which we offer at Studio Maritime. A mechanical movement, which works with a winding system, is typical for classic ship clocks and traditional clocks. It requires manual winding, usually every 7-8 days. A quartz movement, on the other hand, requires batteries, is highly accurate, and requires little maintenance.
On a boat, it's important to place the ship's clock in a central location so everyone can quickly read the time, especially the watch. At home or in a vacation home, this is naturally a more convenient location, perhaps in combination with a weather station.
