1. What does a barograph do that a barometer doesn't?
Remember. A pen continuously records the pressure changes on a paper drum, so you don't just see one reading, but the whole story of the past few days. Each depression is like a valley, each high-pressure area like a hill.
2. Do I need to set up the barograph after receiving it?
Yes, once at your location. The instrument is factory-set to sea level and accurate up to approximately 800–900 meters altitude. Using it at higher altitudes? Please indicate this in advance; we can set up the instrument for your location for an additional charge.
3. How often do I change the paper?
Usually weekly: one sheet records a week of pressure changes. Choose a fixed day, write the date and location on each sheet, and a weather archive will naturally develop. Diagram paper and spare pens are available separately in the shop.
4. Why does a barograph need to be placed free from vibrations?
The pen records everything, including the washing machine, slamming doors, or the engine. A stable, flat surface gives a clean line; on board, choose the quietest spot on the ship.
5. The line becomes faint or jagged. Is the instrument defective?
Almost always, the pen is simply worn out; this is not necessarily a defect, but a consumable item. Replace the fiber pen, and the recording is often sharp again.
6. Can I keep old sheets?
Absolutely: store them flat in a folder, dated. In a few years, you'll be able to read about the worst storms in your sailing area, and that archive is half the charm of the instrument.
