Navigation lights for safe boating
Navigation lights are important for two reasons: they make you visible and they tell other ships which way you are going. The latter is the most important, which is why the colour scheme is the same worldwide: green for starboard, red for port.
If you only see green from another ship, you are looking at its right side and it is moving away from you. If you see red and green next to each other, it is coming straight at you. White is masthead light and stern light: the masthead light points forward, the stern light backward.
Obligations depend on the size of your boat and your sailing area. Length, engine power and whether you are sailing or motoring determine which lights you must have on and with what visible distance. For commercial shipping and for vessels above certain dimensions, certified requirements apply. If you are unsure what applies to your vessel, check the sailing rules for your sailing area or ask us.
LED or incandescent lamp. LED uses significantly less battery power and lasts longer, which makes a noticeable difference on a nocturnal crossing. Classic brass versions are more suitable for a traditional ship. Both are available.
Our navigation lighting is made of brass, chrome-plated brass and plastic, certified where necessary.

Frequently asked questions
Surface-mount installation means that the navigation lights are mounted directly on
the surface of the vessel, such as on the deck, railing or
a raised edge, without the need for a recess in the material. This is extremely convenient for simpler jobs and various types of boats. Depending on the type of boat, surface-mounted lighting is usually installed on the sides
(starboard and port), the bow or the stern of the boat (stern light),
depending on the type of lighting and safety regulations.
Surface-mounted lights are installed on the surface, while recessed lights are placed in a recess or cavity. Surface-mounted lights are easier to install, especially for boats without
space for recessed mounting. Recessed lighting, on the other hand, can provide a more luxurious look.
