Five things every galley needs

After thirty years of sailing, I've learned one thing: a good galley makes the difference between survival and enjoyment. It's not just about size; a two-by-one-and-a-half-meter galley can have everything you need. It's about what's in it. And how cleverly you use it.

These are the five things I wouldn't want to miss anymore.

1. Dinnerware that doesn't break and still looks good

Plastic cups and plastic plates never sound very chic, but they are indispensable for camping and for life on the water. Flamefield dinnerware and glassware have convinced us: it's made of melamine but looks like porcelain, doesn't slide off the counter in choppy seas, and lasts for years. It's the easiest upgrade you can make. And the acrylic and tritan glasses look and feel so real that you won't want to risk broken shards at home either!

2. Good storage boxes

When space is limited, you have to be creative. And nothing is more indispensable than a good storage box. For sailing, you want a bin with a lid that flips up, or stackable versions so you can store as much as possible in a cupboard, similar to what you see in a camper van. At sea, you don't want to bring heavy packaging, so we opt for lightweight. We select based on convenience, usability, and, importantly, durability. Because on board or on the go, everything needs to be able to withstand a knock.

3. Very handy non-slip mats

Under every plate, under every pan, under the cutting board. Does that sound exaggerated? No, certainly not. Because the first time coffee spills all over your charts, you'll wish you had them. Some series of dinnerware and glassware already have non-slip features on the plate or cup, otherwise, the mats are indispensable.
