Coolers & wine coolers: passive where possible, electric where necessary. Power is the scarcest commodity on board, so the first question is always: how long does it need to stay cold?
For a day or a weekend, passive cooling works excellently. A well-insulated cooler, using only ice packs, keeps its contents cold for a day or longer without drawing a single ampere. That's exactly what you want when you're at anchor and the sun is already putting enough strain on your battery.
For longer trips or a permanent spot on board, we have electric coolers. These run on 12V and maintain their temperature for days. The compressor models also cool effectively in high ambient temperatures, and some can even freeze. They do require a well-thought-out power supply: a separate battery or sufficient solar panel capacity, so your starter battery remains unaffected. When choosing, pay attention to the consumption in ampere-hours per 24 hours and compare that to what you generate.
The practical combination is often a bit of both: an electric cooler as permanent cooling on board, and a passive cool bag for the beach, the dinghy, or a picnic.
