Frequently Asked Questions

A compass uses a freely rotating magnetic needle that orients itself along the north-south lines of the Earth's magnetic field. This allows you to determine your bearing relative to north. The side of the needle pointing north is often red.

Place the compass on the map and rotate the map until the compass needle is parallel to the north-south lines, with the red tip pointing north (the top of the map). Now the map is oriented north, and every direction on the map corresponds to the true direction.

The difference between cone-shaped and conical lies in the shape: cone-shaped refers to a completely conical object, such as a conical housing or a spinning map in a compass.

Cone-shaped: This refers to the spinning card having a cone shape or a housing with a cone-shaped design.

Conical (conical): This refers to parts such as a pointer that balances on a conical shaft or a conical housing that provides stability, such as in a gimballing mechanism.

At Studio Maritime we offer compasses that focus on nautical adventure or an outdoor lifestyle.

Map compass: Specially designed for use directly on maps for route planning and navigation. Often equipped with a ruler for measuring distances and determining course directions. Ideal for sailors and adventurers who want to accurately plot their route.

Marine compass for navigation: These rugged compasses are designed for marine and boat use. They withstand the elements, such as saltwater and extreme weather, and provide reliable navigation information, even in the most challenging conditions.

Handheld compass: Compact and portable, a handheld compass is ideal for navigation while hiking or on the go on a boat. It's convenient and versatile, making it a must-have for both at sea and on land.

Each of these compasses has been carefully selected to help you stay on course, whether you're sailing the ocean or embarking on a land adventure.

The best places to mount a compass on your boat:

Dashboard: The most popular location, near the steering column for easy access and visibility. Make sure the dashboard is free from magnetic interference from electronic equipment.

Steering wheel: A logical choice for direct use while navigating, so you can easily read the compass while steering.

Centrally located on deck: Mounting a compass in a prominent spot on the deck provides good visibility from various parts of the boat, ideal for when several people need to see it.

Cabin or wheelhouse: An ideal place if you want to install the compass for general use and navigation on board, but without having to
it gets in the way of other instruments.

Above the waterline, free from magnetic interference: Make sure the compass is well away from engines, electrical equipment, and other strong magnetic sources to avoid disrupting the accuracy of your compass.
